Fell Foodie’s guide to over 80 gourmet recipes to cook in the great outdoors

Harrison Ward (aka Fell Foodie) has been on my radar for a while, building a large social following and sharing images and tasty treats from some of the most beautiful viewpoints in the country, specifically the Lake District. His life story is inspiring, and so is the idea behind this collection of recipes, but perhaps most remarkable of all is the depth and quality of this, his first cookbook.

Here’s a few that got my mouth watering just at the thought - Chickpea, spinach and coconut curry; Yakitori chicken, Tuscan bean stew… and then there’s the simple things - Cheeseburgers; the Full Breakfast; Rice Pudding. Starters, mains and puddings. And all this can be done on a hill? Really?

I like to think of myself as a bit of a foodie, and I certainly like a hike, but the idea of combining the two had never occurred until the Fell Foodie came along. Onion bhajis I can find tricky at the best of times, but Harrison has that rare skill of being able to describe a process concisely, at the right pace and with an eye on the risky moments. This simplicity is exactly what you need up a hill, with the elements shifting.. There can be pressure, for sure, in cooking in these places but I’m glad to say, the bhajis delivered.

A lot of the recipes begin with what can be prepared before leaving home, thus taking some of the complexity out of the final cook out but keeping the key freshness. And the book is packed with lots more tips to make things easier and fun, such as how to pack as light as possible and then responsibly cook from sea to summit.

It’s been a difficult journey for Harrison Ward, dealing with clinical depression and for some time an alcohol addiction that could have easily meant this book would never have been published. Thankfully for Harrison and for us, his talent, the mental health benefits of the outdoors, a mountain of inner strength and an influential Grandmother, he pulled through.

This is a truly fabulous cookbook by Harrison Ward with an innovative adventure twist (and yes, he is named after the actor).
