She is too old now to pass for a boy, but fate sees her competing in the Circus Maximus a final time, the stakes higher than ever. As she races the Four Winds team, against Caligula himself, it’s a trick inherited from her mother that saves her life.
Dido and the horses she loves have won their places in readers’ hearts, the series’ mix of history and cracking good adventure story making them clear favourites every time. We get particularly close to Caligula in this episode and it’s memorable stuff; as far as Roman history goes, these are virtually unbeatable.

But a storm is brewing. It brings with it a fiery black stallion, uncannily like Dido's beloved Porcellus. About Annelise Gray
Debut children's author Annelise Gray was born in Bermuda and moved to the UK as a child. She grew up riding horses and dreaming of becoming a writer. Circus Maximus is partly inspired by her long-held dream of seeing a female jockey win the Grand National, an outcome which exists only in the pages of fiction. After gaining a PhD in Classics from Cambridge, she worked as a researcher for authors and TV companies. She's previously published a history of the women of the Roman Empire and a crime novel set in the Roman Republic. Annelise lives with her husband in Dorset where she teaches Latin.
