Grian’s world takes a knock in this fast-paced future-set adventure, literally and then metaphorically.

Ever since a huge earthquake shifted the earth on its axis in an event known as ‘the tilt’, the world has been getting darker and a huge blot has appeared on the sun. Fortunately, Howard Hansom, the billionaire tech innovator behind the myriad of gadgets that make every aspect of Grian’s and his family’s lives easier, has a plan. He just needs the help of ordinary people to put it into action. That’s when the second blow to Grian’s view of the world occurs: when his sister runs away to Hansom’s new city, Grian goes after her, together with two new friends Jeffrey and Shelli. The more they see of how the city works, and the better they get to know the real Hansom, the more alarming it is. Was Grian’s grandpa, a tilt denier, right all along and what can they do to alert everyone else to what’s really going on?

Duggan, author of the bestseller A Place Called Perfect, spins a tale that weaves environmental themes with other contemporary issues such as how much trust to put in tech giants and those who profess to have the world’s best interests at heart. She’s assembled a great cast of characters, particularly Shelli, a member of the Wilde, who has a special – and very useful – ability to communicate with wild animals.

The adventure will grip young readers from the first page – and definitely have them questioning things thy might have taken for granted – as well as eager for the next in the series.

A fun quest full of fascinating gadgets

The best thing about this book for me was all the imaginative gadgets and inventions that pop up for the main character and his friends to use.

The story is set in a technologically-advanced future and follows Grian, a young boy and two new buddies on a quest to find his sister and grandad as they seek to understand what is happening to their sun.

It's a great story about family and friendship and also makes readers think about if they can always believe what they see in the media, and whether to trust the big companies who might have their own agendas.
