Isaac the hedgehog is a popular little character with the very young and it’s lovely to see him here in a new springtime adventure. Starling wakes him up after his long winter sleep, but won’t share her worm. Hungry, Isaac sets off to find something to eat, only to lose out again to a toad then a heron, and if it wasn’t for his prickles he’d have ended up as a snack for a fox. Still, the kindly little creature points out that it’s spring, and there’s more than enough food for everyone. Isaac’s story has lots to entertain children, and is full of notes on the natural world while also carrying a gentle message about sharing. ~Andrea Reece
Isaac the Hedgehog has had a long winter sleep. He's just woken up and is having a bad hair day (well, you try looking perfect when you've been asleep for four months!). He's also very hungry and in search of food. But every time he finds something to eat another creature gets there first. And when hedgehog himself becomes the target of a bigger animal's appetite, will his spikes save him from becoming someone else's breakfast?
Rosie Wellesley was born in London but grew up in Morocco, Pakistan and the west country. She studied as an undergraduate at L'ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix en Provence and at the Ruskin school of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. Last year she graduated from the postgraduate diploma at Prince's School of Drawing in London. She now lives and works in East London.
