The best way to encounter Shakespeare is by watching, listening to or better still taking part in a performance of a play. This special edition of the First Folio will enable children to do just that. Published in association with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, it includes all 36 plays in the First Folio, published 400 years ago, and in the same order. They’ve been abridged with skill and sensitivity so that they can be performed by 8 children (or more) and in just 20 minutes. Better yet, while some changes to vocabulary have been made to reflect different language use, the language is mainly as written, so that young readers/performers can enjoy the poetry and the drama in full.

In Twelfth Night, they can read – maybe learn by heart – Ariel’s song and Prospero’s parting speech; they’ll discover Jacques’ All the World’s a Stage, and Hamlet’s To be or not to be soliloquy. Emily Sutton’s gorgeous, jewel-like illustrations depict all the leading characters and set the scene for each drama with a full-page illustration. A perfect introduction to Shakespeare’s plays.
