The best way to encounter Shakespeare is by watching, listening to or better still taking part in a performance of a play. This special edition of the First Folio will enable children to do just that. Published in association with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, it includes all 36 plays in the First Folio, published 400 years ago, and in the same order. They’ve been abridged with skill and sensitivity so that they can be performed by 8 children (or more) and in just 20 minutes. Better yet, while some changes to vocabulary have been made to reflect different language use, the language is mainly as written, so that young readers/performers can enjoy the poetry and the drama in full.
In Twelfth Night, they can read – maybe learn by heart – Ariel’s song and Prospero’s parting speech; they’ll discover Jacques’ All the World’s a Stage, and Hamlet’s To be or not to be soliloquy. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is the independent charity that cares for the world’s greatest Shakespeare heritage sites in Stratford-upon-Avon, and promotes the enjoyment and understanding of his works, life and times all over the world.
Dr Anjna Chouhan was an in-house scholar at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust for eleven years, where she developed an approach to adapting Shakespeare for younger audiences. Amongst other publications, Anjna edited the volume on Henry Irving for the Lives of Shakespearian Actors series, contributed to The Shakespeare Book, and co-wrote the Shakespeare edition of Trivial Pursuit. She was lead Shakespearian for the BBC ShakespeareMe project; has co-hosted the podcast Shakespeare Alive, and produces and hosts her own podcast, Shakespeare’s Pants. Anjna has taken her passion for broadening access to Shakespeare to Warwickshire Libraries, where she is currently the Creative Producer.
