This 20-page children’s book has a very important message to convey. Marky, the main character, is a flame-haired fairy with freckles and spectacles. She has mismatched wings and because the one is smaller than the other, she can’t fly. I loved the beautiful illustrations and how the author affirms that Marky is a marvellous fairy at every opportunity. This repetition reinforces how valuable Marky is, reminding the readers to take the message further and realize they are marvellous too. We all have special, unique qualities and deserve to be appreciated and treated with respect and kindness. The themes of the story are acceptance, tolerance, healthy self-esteem and friendship. I love how the author encourages young readers to learn by giving definitions at the end of the book. There are also some useful questions that can be used with young readers to engage in discussions on this topic. A 2-page resource guide is also included. This advises readers on how to talk to people with disabilities. This is an enjoyable book that will add value to a sensitive topic. Suitable for ages, 3 to 8, although adults can also benefit from this book’s warm wisdom.
