It’s a snowy Christmas in Athens when Fotinoula’s Grandfather tells her about the strange sinister creatures causing havoc and on the hunt for children born during the twelve days of Christmas, like her younger sister Mirtoula. With her father away at sea for the first time over the festive period, it’ll be down to Fotinoula to keep her little sister safe with only an old book to guide her. With the grown ups either away or not believing in the Kallikantzaroi, Fotinoula must be resourceful to try to keep the goblins out of the house and away from Mirtoula until the threat has passed on the epiphany. I liked the story’s main character Fotinoula, and I liked how through the course of the book we see her realise just how much her little sister means to her. Mixed in with this creepy tale are also Greek festive traditions and foods to create a story that will entertain and delight readers, from delicious sounding sweet treats to Christmas and New Year’s traditions explained there’s lots in this book to keep the whole family interested in this family focused story with a special surprise at the end.
