National Poetry DayLoveReading is thrilled to announce the launch of The LoveReading4Kids Poetry Prize in association with National Poetry Day. National Poetry Day is the biggest annual celebration of poetry in the UK, bringing people together to enjoy, discover and share words that matter. With the backing of National Poetry Day, LoveReading is launching a poetry competition for children ages 7- 11 from across the UK inspired by the National Poetry Day theme of Truth. The competition is looking for original poems with the title The Truth about School.

The winning poet will win a trophy and certificate, plus a visit to their school from National Poetry Day ambassador and award-winning poet James Carter  - and £250 of books for their school. They will also win an annual subscription to the gorgeous children’s magazine Scoop www.scoopthemag.co.uk

The winning and commended poems will also be published on the LoveReading, LoveReading4Kids and LoveReading4Schools websites.

National Poetry Day Manager Andrea Reece commented: “We know how much children enjoy writing poetry and what a rewarding and creative activity it is, so we are delighted to be working with LoveReading on this special competition. We can’t wait to find out the truth about UK schools as reported by young poets!”

Poetry PrizeLoveReading Managing Director Deborah Maclaren reported: “We are delighted to be working with National Poetry Day to get children and schools across the UK engaged with words and creating their own poems. As Michael Rosen famously said: ‘Poetry is the sounds of word in your ears’ and we’d like every UK child to think about this, be inspired by it and more fully appreciate the joy of poetry. Spread the word and let’s get writing.”

Don’t delay, you have until the end of the Summer term to support your aspiring poets in creating their masterpieces. The LoveReading team of judges cannot wait to read your young poets’ creations! Find out more at www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/submit-poem-entry

LoveReading, LoveReading4Kids and LoveReading4Schools are the UK’s leading book review and recommendation websites, whose mission is to share book love and promote a love of reading by offering the tools, advice and information needed to help you find your next favourite book.

Forward Arts Foundation is responsible for National Poetry Day on the first Thursday of October. This annual mass celebration, founded by William Sieghart CBE in 1994, brings the nation together around the performance, sharing and making of poems: it is the highpoint of our year-round campaign to raise awareness of poetry’s value.

The media reach of the 2018 campaign for poetry exceeded 217 million, generating 1,943 press stories with a PR value of £3.6 million. On National Poetry Day itself, more than 500,000 children engaged with poetry, while 20,000 people attended events registered on the National Poetry Day map. We enable poets, schools, libraries, local councils and cultural organisations to work together year round to ensure no communities are excluded, whether in care homes, prisons or homeless shelters. NPD’s partners include the BBC, leading publishers, booksellers and book trade distributors.

National Poetry Day 2019 will take place on Thursday 3rd October: the theme is ‘Truth’.
