March 2023 Book of the Month

Absolutely of the moment, The Fashion Fix by Lexi Rees might just revolutionise the way you think about fashion and how you shop for clothes and accessories, while also revolutionising your wardrobe through smart up-styling and up-cycling practices. Packed with eye-opening information and inspirational ideas, it’s written in energetic style, with dapper illustrations adding extra flair.

As for that eye-opening information, the book opens with a run-down of bad habits and production practices that have serious consequences for humans, animals and the environment. For example, we wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time, and almost two- thirds of clothes end up in incinerators or landfills within a year of being made. Add to that the appalling conditions of sweatshops that produce fast fashion, and the fact that the “carbon emissions generated by the clothing of an average family is equivalent to driving a car from New York to London”, and the scale of the problem is clear.

But the main thrust of this activity book is how we can all make small changes that’ll have big positive impact. For example, we can become brand aware, and not buy from companies that perpetuate fashion’s ills. We can become fabric-savvy — buy vintage denim rather than new jeans (the book explains how denim is disastrous for the planet). And we can get creative and recycle old clothes into gift wrap, glitzed-up garments, and more.

Also featuring fun fashion quizzes and pages to keep track of your purchases (and how often you end up wearing them…), this is a great gift for the fashionistas in your life — engaging, inspirational and un-preachy.
