Part of the The Muddlemoor Mysteries series, Ruth Quayle’s The Chicken Farm Fiasco serves a fine feast of chuckle-some save-the-day adventure, with Marta Kissi’s illustrations making it extra-accessible for 7+year-olds.

“This is a story about the Easter holidays, except it has nothing to do with chocolate eggs or fluffy bunnies or roast lamb. It has a teeny amount to do with chicks, but not in a good way.” Joe’s free flowing first-person narrative hits the spot from the off when he goes to stay with Granny and his cousins in Muddlemoor, “a hotspot for crime”, no less.

In no time at all, the mystery-solving trio put themselves at the heart of a protest against dastardly Mr Draper’s proposed cruel chicken farm. When Mr Draper’s enemies fall ill, they suspect poisoning is afoot, and it falls to them to save the villagers as well as the innocent chickens. Then, just as it seems all might be lost, Muddlemoor‘s preeminent sleuths accidentally unearth (quite literally…) the solution to saving the day!

Thanks to the characters’ hilarious habit of putting two and two together to get two million, The Chicken Farm Fiasco is perfect for fans of Pamela Butchart.
