About Nicola Penfold
Nicola Penfold was born in Merseyside and grew up in Doncaster. She studied English at Cambridge, before completing a Computing Science masters at Imperial College London.
Where the World Turns Wild was shortlisted for the first Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize in 2017. It was also selected for SCBWI's 2018 Undiscovered Voices anthology.
Nicola lives with her husband, four children and two cats in North London, and escapes when she can to wilder corners of the UK for adventures.

A note from the author - I’m delighted to see When the Wild Calls making its way into bookshops and into readers’ hands. Sequels can be tricky beasts, but returning to this world and these characters has been something I’ve wanted to do from first writing the closing chapters of Where the World Turns Wild. The grey dystopian city Juniper and Bear left behind in the first book isn’t quite the same anymore. Birds fly over the walls and cracks are appearing in the concrete. Green shoots of life breaking through. President Steel is losing her grip. But the news Juniper hears, safe in her beloved Ennerdale, terrifies her. Disease and desperation are spreading in her former home too, and Juniper realises she needs to journey back, for the people she left behind. Although When the Wild Calls can be picked up as a stand alone, I hope this is also a chance for new readers to discover the first book. To go into the bleak sterile city, where nature is disallowed, and escape with Juniper and Bear into the Wild. See everything with fresh eyes, as if for the first time – trees, birds, animals, insects. This vast terrain, dangerous as well as beautiful, in all its wonder and wildness. What a gift it is in all our lives. In our real world, as the climate and biodiversity crisis grows ever more urgent, I write to ring the sirens loud, to protect our wild places and the species that live in them. But my wish is also that my books, as I truly believe stories can, become their own wild places in readers’ imaginations, offering adventure and excitement, but also this deep connection with the natural world that is so essential for us all.
