October 2022 Book of the Month

While “choose-your-own-adventures” have a long tradition in fiction, that’s not the case for picture books, which means this series of interactive “pick your own” picture books will be a sure-fire winner with imaginative adventurers, thanks to Sarah Coyle’s vibrant words and Adam Walker-Parker’s awesome illustrations.

Framed by the disappearance of Vincent’s dog, Trouble, Pick a Story: A Pirate Alien Jungle Adventure plunges readers into the action by asking them to decide where Trouble might have gone – pirate ship, jungle, or bounding after a beam of light?

Throughout, readers devise their own setting and story based on decisions that send them back and forth through the pages.

In addition to choosing how the narrative plays out, adventurers are invited to share their thoughts on topics that feed into the action, from discussing which animal they’d take to school for Show and Tell, to selecting souvenirs for aliens.

With oodles of onomatopoeia and exclamations making reading-together a joy, this energetic book keeps on giving.

It is great for this age and my son liked it and was very concentrated while watching the pages, pictures and trying to find out where the dog had gone. You go into another world while reading this book.... I read this with my daughter who is 4 years old and she loved it. She’s at the stage where she can sometimes find being read to quite boring, however the interactive aspect of the story really kept her engaged and we had so much to talk about.

I read this with my daughter who is 4 years old and she loved it. She’s at the stage where she can sometimes find being read to quite boring, however the interactive aspect of the story really kept her engaged and we had so much to talk about. It was was really lovely as a mother to watch her make choices to where she wanted the story to go. Due to my work, I know the importance of getting young children involved in reading and developing their comprehension skills, this is one of the first books that I’ve read to my daughter which is so interactive and really builds on her comprehension skills. It’s really lovely to have the questions ready in the book so it reminds the adult to keep the dialogue going with the child.... Read Full Review
