Crime capers don’t come much more soft-boiled than this one, yet still junior PI Hugh Dunnit struggles to crack the case.

Who is responsible for eating Hugh’s homework? His mum and dad point the finger at Hugh’s newly adopted dog (and best friend) Shelter, who does have previous in this area – the list of family items chewed to pieces is extensive. Hugh is determined to clear his dog’s name and to stop his parents taking Shelter to the shelter.

His investigations unfold via a joke and wordplay packed narrative that will reduce children (and a fair few adults) to hysterics. Fast as the jokes come though, they don’t interfere with the storytelling and for all the humour, readers will notice just how important a friend Shelter is to Hugh.

Hugely appealing cartoon style illustrations by Lee Cosgrove mean that even less confident readers will gobble this up as quickly as Shelter would herself. Great stuff!
